Ocado customers have donated over £1m to the online supermarket’s ‘You Give We Give’ scheme since the beginning of March. Ocado Retail has matched this sum, generating £2m worth of food and cash donations for its food bank partners and social enterprises working to alleviate food poverty throughout the UK.
Launched in 2014 to help tackle UK food poverty and maintain its near-zero food waste levels, Ocado Retail’s You Give We Give scheme allows its customers to add a donation for food bank partners and food poverty-related social enterprises as part of their grocery order. Ocado Retail has matched the value of the donations received, either in the form of food or in direct cash donations.
Recognising the unprecedented pressure food banks have been under over the last twelve weeks, Ocado Retail has boosted awareness of the scheme among its customers. It has actively encouraged shoppers to add a You Give We Give donation voucher to their grocery order where possible. This has received an overwhelming response. The total value of customer donations increased by over 800% between the first week of March and the first week of April. The number of customers now donating to the scheme has more than quadrupled since the beginning of the year and the average value of each individual customer donation has risen by 25%.
Since its inception six years ago, You Give We Give has generated over £6m worth of food and cash donations. Over £1m of this total figure was generated in March and April this year alone.
Ocado Retail’s You Give We Give partners include Feeding Britain, The Felix Project, Community Shop, Bankuet, UK Harvest and The Big Help Project. These organisations provide critical support for people at risk of hunger and malnutrition across the UK. Their work during the current crisis has included servicing an unprecedented rise in the demand for food parcels as well as providing ‘holiday hunger’ support for children who normally receive free school meals.

You Give We Give differs from traditional supermarket food bank donation schemes which primarily rely on customers donating ambient food products in-store. The partners of Ocado Retail’s scheme receive both fresh and ambient items. Furthermore, they are also able to choose the fresh food they receive on a daily basis so they get access to the exact products they need.
