After years of the familiar sight of orange-hued glasses on patios and in pub gardens, new data suggests that Brits have warmed to a new go-to summer spritz, using ingredients that are closer to home.
The Hugo Spritz – a light and floral cocktail, typically made with prosecco, elderflower and mint, offers a softer, more homegrown take on the Italian aperitif.
At the heart of it is elderflower: a fragrant, distinctly British flavour that’s long been a staple of countryside cordials and summer fêtes, but has flown under the radar in recent years. Now, it’s having a renaissance, with Ocado seeing a 107% year on year increase in sales of elderflower liqueur.
Elderflower cordial is seeing a similar lift, with M&S Elderflower Cordial up 45% and Bottlegreen’s Sparkling Elderflower Pressé up nearly 80% year on year. Fresh mint, another signature spritz ingredient, has also seen a 47% sales increase.
And it’s not just the mixers driving this trend, Prosecco sales are fizzing too. Sales of the Terra Organica Prosecco are up almost 50%, suggesting a wider surge in customers choosing prosecco to complement their summer spritzes at home.
Searches for ‘Hugo Spritz’ on Ocado.com have increased by a staggering 694% compared to last week as Brits enjoy the burst of summer weather. And the Hugo Spritz isn’t just trending in shopping baskets – it’s taking off on social media too.
TikTok videos featuring the cocktail are racking up millions of views, including one from @planet.juli with over 2.6 million views and another from @thewannabebartender showing an easy how-to, viewed over 1.6 million times.
Vanessa Pearson, Trading Manager for BWS at Ocado Retail, said: “We’re seeing the Hugo Spritz pop up more and more, as a firm favourite on bar menus now and customers recreating it at home. It’s clearly resonating with people looking for something lighter, fresher and more floral than the classic bitter spritz – and our sales on Ocado.com are suggesting this too.
Whilst other spritz variations often rely on stronger flavours like limoncello or bitter liqueurs, which can be more of an acquired taste, elderflower brings a more approachable flavour to the spritz, helping to drive its widespread appeal.
To get the balance right I’d recommend the simple ratio of 3-2-1: 3 parts prosecco, 2 parts elderflower and 1 part soda water, along with plenty of ice and a handful of fresh mint. A slice of lime also adds a nice citrus edge.
From sparkling pressés to fresh mint and prosecco, Ocado has all the essentials to help customers craft the perfect Hugo Spritz at home, spotlighting a summer cocktail that’s as refreshing as it is rooted in British flavour.
