Meet our leadership team

Melanie Smith, CBE - CEO
Melanie Smith, CBE

Hi, I’m Mel. I am the CEO of Ocado Retail. I am proud to lead an exceptional and mighty bunch of colleagues as we accelerate the growth of our incredible business.

Life before Ocado: I was Strategy Director for Marks & Spencer with responsibility for group strategy, M&S Bank and M&S Services. Before that, I was the Bupa Global Strategy and Marketing Director, and Chief Operating Officer at TalkTalk. Before joining the corporate world, I was a partner in McKinsey’s Retail practice, working with grocers on every continent. I hold an LLB (Hons)/Bcom. from Auckland University and an MBA from Kellogg.

Favourite thing about shopping at Ocado: the outstanding range of products that I can get from Ocado that I can’t get anywhere else, this is particularly helpful with my foody French husband – we love the Natoora tomatoes and finocchiona; the Picard mussels and the Reflets de France Chaource.

Niall McBride - CFO
Niall McBride

Hi, I’m Niall. I’m CFO for Ocado Retail with responsibility for our Finance, Operations & Property, Data & Insights and IT functions, supporting the commercial teams to continue driving the growth of our business.

Life before Ocado: I was a Managing Director in corporate finance at Rothschild & Co. where I worked across a wide variety of sectors, including supply chain and logistics businesses, and consumer-facing industries. I’m a Chartered Accountant having worked at PWC and EY. I hold a BSc (Hons) Business Studies from the University of Ulster and a PgDip Accountancy from Queen’s University Belfast.

Favourite thing about shopping at Ocado: my favourite thing is the convenience of the early morning and late evening time slots. With two young boys, we always have something to do, so getting our groceries when we need them makes a big difference.

Christina Hawley - Chief Commercial Officer
Christina Hawley

Chief Commercial Officer

Hi, I’m Christina. I’m responsible for commercial strategy at Ocado. I also look after Ocado own-label, product development and food tech, as well as managing and growing our new and complementary businesses including our Home and Lifestyle portfolio, Fetch, Zoom and Entertain by Ocado.

Life before Ocado: I was an associate partner at McKinsey & Co where I focused on helping retail clients achieve their goals in digital and eCommerce. I also spent time working for Marks & Spencers and Jumia, the largest eCommerce platform in Africa. I have an MBA from INSEAD and a BS from SUNY-FIT (Summa Cum Laude).

Favourite thing about shopping at Ocado: friendliest delivery folk! We have a lot of packages show up at our house but the Ocado delivery crew is always unbelievably polite and friendly. I also love Ocado Zoom which is being trialled in my neighbourhood and deliveries groceries in less than one hour. For a mom with two kids, that is life-changing! Getting nappies and milk delivered to my house on a rainy Sunday evening means I can spend time with my family and not worry about the week ahead.

Jonathan Wiseman - General Counsel & Chief People Officer
Jonathan Wiseman

General Counsel & Chief People Officer

Hi, I’m Jonathan. I’m the General Counsel and Chief People Officer at Ocado Retail with responsibility for our Legal, People and Sustainability functions. My Ocado adventure started in 2013 in the legal team at Ocado Group, for the last three years as Deputy General Counsel, primarily responsible for Ocado Solutions. My Ocado highlight to date was negotiating the terms on which Ocado Group would provide tech and services to Ocado Retail!

Life before Ocado: I worked at Slaughter and May for nine years practising corporate law. I have a BA(Hons) in Classics and English from Oxford University.

Favourite thing about shopping at Ocado: Where to start? Sparing my kids the drudgery of being dragged around a supermarket is enough in itself, but add to that the amazing and ever-expanding range, lovely drivers and incredible service and I’m pretty hooked!

Julian Beer - Chief Merchandising Officer
Julian Beer

Chief Merchandising Officer

Hi, I’m Julian. I’m Ocado Retail’s Chief Merchandising Officer with responsibility for our buying function. My Ocado adventure began in November 2021.

Life before Ocado: My career in food retail started back in 2000 at an organic food wholesaler in Germany and worked in various roles and companies including Aldi. In 2011, I joined the international buying team at Lidl, managing various categories in global sourcing and being part of the team that saw Lidl expand rapidly and successfully into new markets, including the USA. In 2017, I became Senior Buying Director for Lidl UK, where I implemented Cross Docking Centres to allow Lidl GBs rapid expansion. Thereafter I joined the board of Lidl Ireland & Northern Ireland as their Chief Commercial Officer, where I was responsible for all commercial areas such as buying and range, strategy and marketing, category management, brand and packaging, and quality assurance.

Favourite thing about shopping at Ocado: I’m a big foodie, but I’m particularly excited about the size of our chocolate and craft beer selection (which happily includes my current favourite, Beavertown Gamma Ray American Pale Ale.)

Laura Harricks - Chief Customer Officer
Laura Harricks

Chief Customer Officer

Hi, I’m Laura. I joined Ocado in July 2020, and I’m responsible for leading our end-to-end customer and brand experience.

Life before Ocado: I moved to the UK in 2008 after several years as a management consultant in Australia, France and the USA. In London, I joined Dixons Carphone and worked across a variety of commercial and marketing roles, before becoming the Online Trading and Marketing Director for Carphone Warehouse in 2016. I joined Monsoon Accessorize as Digital Director in 2019, where I was responsible for global ecommerce; also running their digital transformation programme, including a full site re-platform. I hold a Bachelor of Engineering (Mech/Biomed) & Bachelor of Arts (French) from the University of Sydney.

Favourite thing about shopping at Ocado: I love being on the receiving end of our service, I really appreciate the attention we give to what matters as a customer. Lots of delivery slots (Green options included). Wide range so I can decide where the basics will do and where I want to trade up. An offer that goes way beyond groceries – save me with kids essentials, lunchboxes, toys, socks etc. The ease of a “favourite shop”. Plus our service is super reliable and our drivers are the friendliest.

Rose Price - Buying Director
Rose Price

Buying Director

Hi, I’m Rose. I’m responsible for our buying function. My Ocado adventure started in 2010 when I joined as Head of Buying. I have vast experience in the food industry, encompassing food retailing, cash and carry and supply chain, and I have an industry reputation for my knowledge from ‘farm gate to plate’. I can definitely say I understand the former really well, as I am married to a farmer; as a result, breakfast conversations in our house can be particularly interesting and intense, especially when prices are falling!

Life before Ocado: I started out in the meat industry back when it was very much a man’s world. I then moved into the grocery sector, starting as a store trainee, then moved on to be in charge of procurement for a large food manufacturer. I then moved to Safeway as a Trading Controller for Protein. My passion to work abroad me took me to France for a two year stint at Metro’s training academy (I can still order the essentials in French: wine and coffee!), then to Somerfield as Head of Buying. Next, I moved into online as Buying Director for Abel & Cole which gave me the taste for eCommerce. I hold an MBA from the University of Stirling.

Favourite thing about shopping at Ocado: being able to order fresh flowers.
